CULTURE SWAP

CULTURE SWAP

Nowadays with the globalization, culture swap is a current phenomenon.

But the real questions are :

-How the identity of one society is influencing an other one or an other generation ?

-Why cultures are influencing each other ?

-What culture means ?

MODERNIZATION :

To go further in the evolution of the culture by swapping it, we can also talk about modernization. Because the more the time passes, the more modern the culture is. Evolution and modernization could be synonym.

Weaving (old technique) + iron (new material) = modernization

RE-INTERPRETATION :

If we are swapping cultures, I might re-interprate it because everyone see it differently and it is a natural reaction when you receive an influence.

MIXING :

By swapping cultures we could be brung about mixing because we are still under the influence of our initial culture.

This image also represent well what consumer society has done on the essence of the culture.

Indeed, to me it is explaining that we are human being so we should be civilized (symbolized by the caravans), but nowadays we are back to animal statement (violence, heartless....) because, in this postcard, we look like a cow's herd.

Swapping is not just a naive thing. It involves different reactions. So swapping cultures as well.

Swapping could be seen as :

-reinterpretation

-evolution

-modernization

-distortion

-mixing

EVOLVING (through diferent centuries) :

Each centuries has his own iconography. It is corresponding to a certain time with a certain life-style, cloth-style, design-style and we all recognize it because this is the identity of the culture of an epoch.

Those identities are different depending of centuries. They correspond to a certain culture. This culture is evolving through centuries with the society itself. But sometimes we like to remember the old-time because the iconography of it is amazing for us or because it is linked to good memories. For many reasons, the identity of all the different centuries cultures have stayed in mind and artist are pleased to show us how the society's culture has evolved with the time...

In those two images, the evolution resides in the reuse of an old technique. Embroidery is the old technique used here and the artist has made it looks like a digital appearance which is obviously  the modern part of this. This process is the reason why modernization is an extant extension of evolution.

The print (pre-historical drawings) + the utilization = modernization

Those two images are a symbol of modernization to me because it represent a haystack (has existed since ever) and soil stack (make me think of old farmer ---> refer to "angelus" by Millet) but in an art way.

Those two images are a re-interpretation of what a vanity used to be because : it is a photo and it is a gathering of  new things.

DISTORTION :

When we are swapping it always infers distortion. It is exactly the same process as when we were a child and we were repeating secrets to the others, at the end of this infernal way that the secret has traveled, it is not the same one as the one of the beginning because during the swap it has been distort.

We are swapping cultures by selling it (ex : Coca-Cola). Selling means insert consumer society in the process, which, in my opinion, ruins the real essence of it. The culture swap is on one hand, extremely enriching but on the other hand, it is a shame because it infers distortion which canceled what you were really looking for into it.
